The Home & Land
Sunny Heights Bed & Breakfast, a flourishing farmstead, carries a rich history dating back to the late 1800s when it was established by the Templeton family. The entire property, including the charming buildings and the family home, was meticulously constructed by Milton and Helen Templeton. In 1918, they affectionately named their home "Sunny Heights Farm," a name that resonates with the warmth and hospitality that this establishment exudes. Hence the name of our venue & current bed & breakfast.
While the original farm spanned an impressive 300 acres, today, Sunny Heights sits on close to 10 acres of picturesque land. The property remained in the Templeton family's care until 1991, preserving its legacy and familial connection.
Situated in the vicinity of several natural attractions, Sunny Heights B&B is surrounded by the beauty of Leopold Woods, Peterson Pits Recreation Area, and McFarland Park. These nearby parks provide guests with opportunities for outdoor recreation and exploration, adding to the allure of the bed and breakfast.
The land surrounding the farmstead has undergone a fascinating transformation, with the Templeton gravel pits contributing to the creation of a natural prairie. This expansive prairie serves as a haven for wildlife, including deer, foxes, turkeys, raccoons, and more. Guests can revel in the tranquility of this unique natural setting, connecting with the environment and its diverse inhabitants.
Stepping into Sunny Heights B&B is like taking a journey back in time, offering guests a captivating glimpse into life on an Iowa farm at the turn of the century. The 3 bedroom interior boasts a beautiful blend of oak and pine, showcasing intricate details that evoke a sense of coziness and nostalgia.
The Barns
Standing proudly on this land is a testament to a rich past that dates back to 1898 when a grand barn, now the heart of our venue, first took root. Before the completion of the family home, the Templeton family resided in this barn, breathing life into its sturdy beams and rustic allure.
At the center of our venue stands a silo, a distinctive feature that has witnessed the passage of time. Constructed in 1920, this silo was once connected to the original barn through a short corridor, echoing the agricultural roots of Sunny Heights. As we embark on a journey into the future, we have exciting plans to renovate the silo, preserving its historical significance while adding a touch of modern elegance.
This land played a vital role in shaping the community during the Great Depression. The gravel pits, integral to the property, contributed essential materials to projects such as the Old Lincoln Highway. As an essential resource hub, Sunny Heights held a crucial role in supporting infrastructure development during challenging times. The interconnectedness of this venue with important projects underscores its historical importance and resilience.
In the face of economic hardships, the Templeton family and Sunny Heights persevered. Had the farm folded during the Great Depression, it would have significantly delayed recovery in the area due to the vital resources it provided.
